Support Groups & Resources
If you have a support group in your area for parents of asthmatic/allergic children, I would love to hear about it. If you would like to start a group in your area, let me know what I can do to help. You can contact me directly at carmen_cornils@yahoo.com.
I will soon be in the process of putting together a power-point presentation on CD that you could use to launch a support group and for continuing education for the group in understanding and managing the disease. Members of the group need to learn as much as they can about asthma/allergies and the various medical ways of controlling it with their doctors' help, but they also really need to learn about building health, in doing all the things we as mothers can do in the nutrition and supplementation of our children's diets to enable their bodies to actually overcome the disease. This can be a long and frustrating process, but it can be done---I've seen it done. And it can be done easier if people can share and learn from others and have their support.
Some good on-line resources:
noattacks.org This website is short, simple, and straight to the point, dealing mainly with recognizing asthma, triggers for asthma, and teaching children all about triggers. (Note: Naturally it is good to avoid triggers where possible until health is built and the environment no longer a threat. But what we're really looking for is to build the health so the body can live normally in the environment and not have asthma rather than taking the approach of avoiding the environment and keeping the asthma. As I come across websites that actually give useful information on nutrition that helps sufferers to overcome asthma through building health, I will post them here. In the meantime, if you find any, please let me know.)
crnusa.org An excellent website, "Council For Responsible Nutrition", talks about the science behind supplements, studies done on supplements, and refutes irresponsible media reporting on the dangers of certain supplements.
asthmaworld.org Be sure to look at their powerpoint presentation. Great site for seeing how supplements alleviate asthma, reading case histories, and actual studies. They also recruit volunteers for ongoing studies (volunteers buy their products), but this is a great site to let you know that supplementation does work.
